Dear CHA Community,
The events that have unfolded over the past several days have raised awareness about race, privilege, violence, and despair. Our city and nation are gathering, grieving, and processing. It is hard to manage our own feelings let alone support our children’s feelings around this topic right now. It is okay to put things on hold when there are more important matters to address in the world. Conversations around race and inequity can be very difficult and uncomfortable. This is where we ask that we give ourselves and each other grace. We encourage people to lean into their discomfort in the pursuit of growth. We are not going to make progress as a country unless we stop avoiding crucial conversations. We’ve put together a list of resources that can be used by students and parents. We invite you to share materials that you’ve found beneficial for consideration in the classroom @Holly Senaga. We, as a school community, have a lot of necessary and important work to do around race as we educate future leaders.
PARENTS: With the help of our community, we are building a resource page of age-appropriate materials about diversity and inclusion including books, podcasts, films and websites. As we learn, grow, and change, so will the resources. We would advise you to go through the list prior to sharing it with your child to find suitable material. There are so many resources available and while we are all still at home, we encourage you to take the time to educate yourselves in whatever way you feel appropriate. You can find the page here.
Summer Math and Reading – This year’s Summer Reading and Math program has been published. You will find all the information you need here.
Summer Access – When school gets out, we will be archiving class Teams. We will leave the CHA Parent Team open and active so that admin and parents can use it. Remember to tag the administrator you have a question for. Teachers will be on vacation and not monitoring email or Teams. Teachers who are tutoring in the summer will create a tutoring class on Teams. Renaissance Place will be closing AR Testing while school is out, and TCI will not be available. Everything else on the Computer Lab Website will still be available including subscriptions to Brain Pop, Brain Pop Jr., Starfall and IXL. Please contact Mrs. Morlidge if you have any questions or resources you want to share.
Report Cards – Report cards will be sent home to parents in good financial standing on the afternoon of Friday, June 12th via Jupiter. Please make sure that these email addresses [email protected] and [email protected] are in your mail contacts so that you receive the email.
REACH (Remote E-learning At Chestnut Hill) Survey – Your opinions are always important to us as we strive to improve the services we offer our families. We would love to collect your feedback about our online school. Mrs. Morlidge has created a survey that you can complete anonymously. Please look for the link in the email version of this update. The survey will be open for two weeks.
Summer Camp – Registration for summer camp is open now, and our summer camp program will begin on June 15th. The Back-Up Care Advantage System is not yet accepting reservations until June 22nd, so we recommend that you submit a reservation through our website, and we can assist with changing the type of reservation once our camp dates have been confirmed. You can find all the information you need here. Our COVID-19 enhanced health and safety protocols were developed with guidance from pediatric infectious disease specialist, Dr. Kristin Moffitt, and you can information on the protocols here, as well as general resources and information on our organizational COVID-19 policies here. Because parents will not be allowed in the building for drop-off, and administrative focus will be on conducting health screenings, we are asking all families to complete all necessary paperwork PRIOR to drop-off. Processing paperwork at the front desk will not be an option.
Summer Tutoring – Some of our teachers will be available to tutor students individually during the summer over Teams. You can see who is available and when here. Please contact the teacher directly to sign up.
Green Team – Please join us in celebrating this year’s student Green Team for all their incredible environmental efforts! This was a group that not only came up with countless ideas, they were quick to translate those ideas into action. They wrote announcements to share resources with and to encourage their peers, they created informative videos, they weighed food waste in the Café, they maintained the school garden, and they collaborated with our wonderful chefs to switch from using disposable utensils at snack time to using regular silverware. When we transitioned to remote learning, they continued to connect and used the “30 Days of 30 Ways to Love the Planet” to promote Earth Day initiatives and ideas and to keep working on maintaining our King County Green School Sustaining Level status. We are incredibly proud and appreciative of their leadership and work!
Moving Up Ceremony –Mr. Rees will be hosting the Moving Up ceremony as a Teams Live Event on Friday, June 12th @ 9:30 am.
Field Day Drive Through - Come and join us for this event on Thursday, June 11th. There will be a designated route for cars to follow - please enter the driveway closest to the front office and drive down and around. Please stay in your car at all times and wear a mask. Each grade level has been designated a time slot which are as follows 9-10: Kindergarten, 10-11: First Grade, 11-12: Second Grade, 12-1: Third Grade, 1-2: Fourth Grade, 2-3: Fifth Grade. The school will not be open so please have your child use the restroom prior to joining the parade. Questions? Contact Coach Sturgess.
School Technology Returns – Please bring any school technology (laptops, surfaces, adapters, etc.) that you have been using at home to the Field Day Drive Through.
