Dear CHA Community,
Your continued patience as we navigate this complicated situation with COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) is appreciated. Since mid-February, our administration and teachers have been working to put a plan in place in case of a school closure due to COVID-19 became necessary. We have been following guidance from Public Health – Seattle & King County — to stay open as long as possible. In light of the information shared today by our elected officials, we believe it is time to enact our REACH (Remote E-Learning At Chestnut Hill) Program to serve students beginning Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27. Teachers will post lessons for students to follow on their homework sites by 4:00 pm daily. Teachers will have their office hours posted on their Grade Level Webpage in case you need clarification.
Chestnut Hill Academy will be closed beginning Friday, March 13. Camp is cancelled for Friday. Conferences will occur through Teams on Friday. At this time, we expect the building closure to extend through March 27. We will reevaluate any further closures during that time. We feel truly fortunate that the hard work of the staff to implement the REACH Program ensures that classes and learning can continue during this time.
We want to reiterate that there are no confirmed cases or incidents of exposure of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) within the Chestnut Hill Academy community at this time. Surrounding school districts, both public and private, which include Bellevue, Seattle, Shoreline, and Lake Washington public school, have begun making decisions to close, and we anticipate many more will follow.
What This Means for Students
Tomorrow, Thursday, March 12, will be a regular Parent/Teacher Conference and camp day. Tomorrow will allow parents time to collect any learning materials students might need and bring home any personal items they might want while school is closed. All conferences scheduled for Friday, March 13 will occur through Teams.
Beginning on Friday, March 13 through Friday, March 27th, our school building will be closed to students.
We understand that musical performances have been a time-honored tradition at CHA and something students look forward to all year. These performances truly create so many wonderful learning and growth opportunities for our students. That makes it is beyond disappointing to have to share that they are cancelled for this year. With large gatherings banned, numerous student absences, school and KPC closures, we had no choice but to make this difficult decision. Grade-level teachers are discussing the possibility of having students still sing the songs or put on small productions (4th & 5th graders, since these students will graduate, and some of our 4th grade students will apply out, so it is their last year) that they would video to share with families, but this is time-dependent.
Public Health Guidance
We encourage you to continue to follow existing guidelines to protect your own health. The Centers for Disease Control recommends:
- Wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds; use alcohol-based sanitizer if no water is available
- Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
- Avoid close contact (within 6 feet) with those who are sick
- Stay home if sick
- Cover a cough or sneeze with a tissue, throw the tissue in the trash, wash hands
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched object and surfaces
We understand that this plan will create hardship for many families, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation. CHA is a strong community because of your continued partnership.
