Kindergarten

This week at Art, Kindergarten students were introduced to American artist, Faith Ringgold, her history, and her work. First, we looked at photo examples of Faith’s story quilts and her book, Tar Beach. She creates folk-art style acrylic paintings with a quilted fabric border which illustrates her childhood memories growing up in Harlem. After we learned about the artist and her work, students were asked to draw their favorite memory with their family. They then put small color paper patches to create a quilt-like border.  

This week in Computer Science, Kindergarten is using Kid Pix 3D to create posters for their musical, Get Hoppin. Next week, students will finish and print their posters. 

This week in Library, Kindergarten students enjoyed listening to and discussing The Jelly Donut Difference by Maria DismondyThe story helped facilitate our class discussion on kindness and sharing. We also continued our celebration of Black History Month. Check out days are as follows: Wednesdays: Bernal, Roberts, Palladino 

This week’s objectives in Kindergarten Music were vocal tone production, vocal repertoire, ensemble work, and movement.  Kindergarteners spent time learning, singing, and choreographing another song to their Spring Musical Get Hoppin’!  

This week the kindergarteners participated in some cooperation and team-building exercises. They were set a variety of different challenges and asked to synergize to complete their task or goal. They particularly enjoyed “build the bridge” which had students work in some groups building a foam noodle bridge trying to travel from one side of the gym to the other. One student from the group would have to balance and walk across the bridge while the others helped to build it.  The Kindergarteners did an excellent job of sharing ideas and supporting each other in this activity. These are vital life skills which will help in many different sports.  

This week in Spanish, kindergarten started learning about shapes (heart, oval, circle, triangle, square, star, and rectangle)Students became shape detectives and looked for the shapes around the Spanish classroom. Students also learned a new song about numbers called “Diez Deditos” = “Ten Little Fingers”. Students continued working on their Numbers Book in class.   Practice at home:  Students can practice the numbers and shapes using Quizlet at home. The Quizlet can be found on the Spanish Homework Page.

First Grade

This week at Art, First Grade students had a catch-up day. Students were finishing up with a few projects.  

This week in Computer Science, First Grade is using Kid Pix 3D to create posters for their musical, Welcome to the Jungle. Next week, students will finish and print their posters. 

This week in Library, First Grade students continued to celebrate Black History Month. They enjoyed learning about Venus and Serena Williams. We also focused on kindness by reading and discussing the story The Jelly Donut Difference by Maria Dismondy Check out days are as follows: Tuesday: Saccardo  Wednesday: Carver  Thursday: Chow

This week’s objectives in First Grade Music were vocal tone production, vocal repertoire, ensemble work, and movement.  First graders spent time learning, singing, and choreographing another song to their Spring Musical Welcome to the Jungle!

This week in Spanish, first grade worked on learning how to pronounce their new group of vocabulary words. Students worked together to practice pronunciation.  Students worked on designing their own farms and drawing out the farm animals. Students are labeling the animals that live on their farms with the Spanish name. Practice at home:  Students can practice the farm animals using Quizlet at home. The Quizlet can be found on the Spanish Homework Page.

Second Grade

This week at Art, Second Grade students continued working on their heart sculptures inspired by Romero Britto.  

This week in Computer Science, Second Grade is using Kid Pix 3D to create posters for their musical, Dinostars! Next week, students will finish and print their posters. 

This week in Library, Second Grade students continued to celebrate Black History Month. We focused on Shirley Chisholm, Muhammad Ali, Nicola Adams, and Serena and Venus Williams.  Check out days are as follows: Wednesday: Duffina. Thursday: Fox, Kolb, Morman 

This week’s objectives in Second Grade Music were vocal tone production, vocal repertoire, ensemble work, and movement.  Second graders spent time learning, singing, and choreographing another song to their Spring Musical Dinostars! 

This week the 2nd graders continued working on their core strength and balance. We used the traverse climbing wall in a variety of different ways. Firstly, the students worked on traversing from one side to the other planning their route as they went and ensure they had control and balance as they moved. Then we played some fun relay games where students would climb to the top of the wall and then return to their team before the next player went. 

This week in Spanish, the second grade had their Mi Cara Quiz. Students had to translate the words and label a face as part of their quiz. Students also started their new group of words. Students are learning the words to describe their bodies such as arm, leg, elbow, and head. Practice at home: Students can practice their vocabulary words at home using the Quizlet found on the Spanish page.

Third Grade 

This week at Art, Third Grade students continued working on the Doodle for Google project.  

This week in Computer Science, Third Grade is using Kid Pix 3D to create posters for their musical, The Granny Awards. Next week, students will finish and print their posters.

This week in Library, Third Grade students continued to celebrate Black History Month. We focused on Shirley Chisholm, Muhammad Ali, Nicola Adams, and Serena and Venus Williams. Check out days are as follows: Wednesday: Warenkiewicz, Newell Thursday: Shamsen 

This week’s objectives in Third Grade Music were vocal tone production, vocal repertoire, ensemble work, and movement.  Third graders spent time learning, singing, and choreographing another song to their Spring Musical The Granny Awards! 

This week the 3rd  graders continued working on their core strength and balance. We used the traverse climbing wall in a variety of different ways. This week in Spanish, third grade worked on pronouncing their new vocabulary words. Students learned how to pronounce the words correctly and how to pronounce the words that contain accent marks such as ático and sótano. Students also labeled a house using the vocabulary words and then started working on Sentence Translations.  Practice at home: Students can practice “La Casa” vocabulary using Quizlet at home. The Quizlet can be found on the Spanish Homework Page.

Fourth Grade

This week at Art, Fourth Grade students continued working on the Doodle for Google project.

This week’s objectives in Fourth Grade Music were vocal tone production, vocal repertoire, ensemble work, and movement.  Fourth graders spent time learning, singing, and choreographing another song to their Spring Musical Dig It!   

This week the 4th graders started their football unit. Our focus today was on spatial awareness and how to create space off the ball to receive a pass. We played “Ultimate Football” which allowed the students to practice these skills as well as work on their throwing and catching which are vital skills for playing football. I was very impressed with the teamwork of all the students. 

This week in Spanish, fourth grade started working on their Capitulo 1A Oral Presentations. Students wrote 4-5 sentences in which they introduced themselves, described what they like doing, and what they dislike doing in Spanish. Once students wrote their sentences, they met with me and we edited the sentences for grammar and spelling. The students paired off and started rehearsing their lines. Students will be presenting these to the class next week.

Fifth Grade 

This week at Art, Fifth Grade students continued working on the Doodle for Google project.

This week’s objectives in Fifth Grade Music were vocal tone production, vocal repertoire, ensemble work, and movement.  Fifth graders spent time learning another song to their Spring Musical Press Start! 

This week the 5th graders started their football unit. Our focus today was on spatial awareness and how to create space off the ball to receive a pass. This week in Spanish, fifth grade continued working with Chapter 2B.  This week students learned about plurals in Spanish.  The students learned about the definite and indefinite articles plural forms. They also learned how to make nouns plural. Students had a quiz on the verb “estar”.     Class Announcement: Student will be having their Chapter 2B test the week of March 16th- March 20th. We will be completing a Study Guide in class next week and they will be sent home in next week’s Friday Folders.
