Dear CHA Community,

Children are excellent listeners when they want to be. They hear things when we think they’re not listening. Throughout the school, we’re overhearing students share their concerns about becoming sick because another student coughed or sneezed. They are sharing conversations they’ve overheard from home, the news, or other people and misinterpreting this information because they aren’t fully comprehending what is happening. They are scared because they don’t know what to expect. With this in mind, we ask that clarification about the Coronavirus be shared so that our students aren’t as anxious, and they feel safe attending school. It is flu season. People are sick. This happens this time every year, but it doesn’t mean that they will get ill or that someone has the Coronavirus.  The real sign of a strong community is when they come together in support of one another when times are tough, not when they’re easy. Lead with the belief that people have the best intentions and treat each other in this manner. Conversations at home carry over to the school and can have an impact, both positive and negative. Helping our children understand and know that they are safe is our focus. We appreciate the continued conversations. Our children are listening.

Spelling Bee Winner – Congratulations to our Spelling Bee winner, 4th Grader Zoey Barlin and the runner up, 4th Grader Makayla Du. It was a hard-fought contest, especially the final round. All the students who took part in the competition are to be commended for their effortsThank you also to the staff and parents who make the event possible. Zoey will now move on to the Regional Spelling Bee in Seattle which will take place on February 29th, 2020 at Town Hall Seattle.

Awards of Excellence – Please help us recognize the incredible staff at CHA who consistently impress and inspire you by nominating them for a 2020 Awards of Excellence! The deadline for you to submit nominations is Wednesday, February 26. Please click here to make your nomination(s), it only takes a couple of minutes to complete the form and means a lot to the people you nominate. There are several categories to choose from including Rising Star, Community Service, Right Way to Work, Environmental Champion and Family Partnership, which means there are plenty of opportunities to spread the love!

Valentine’s Day Parties – Each grade will be hosting a party to celebrate Friday the 14th. Grade level teachers will send information about their grades plans and how you can get involved. We just wanted to take a minute to remind you that volunteer opportunities will be posted on the CHA Sign-Ups page, and any food you bring in must be nut-free
.

Tuition Agreements The deadline for signing the contract is 4:00 pm on Friday, February 14th. If you did not receive the email with the links, you can find them on the Parent Portal, or reply to this email. We have received a larger number of applications than usual (thank you for your referrals!) so it’s important that we know who will be returning, in order that we know how many places we have available to offer. If your child is currently in 4th Grade, we recommend that families re-enroll, and if accepted to another school notify us prior to May 30th that you will not be returning. We have a large pool of 4th graders returning which will limit space available in 5th as we extend contracts to students who’ve applied for 5th grade next year.

Automated External Defibrillators (AED) - These have been installed now. They are next to the elevators and there is one on each floor. To find out how to use one, plus learn all sorts of potentially lifesaving tips, at our CPR for Parents class on Thursday, April 23rd from 6:00 – 9:00. RSVP is required because we need to know how many instructors will be required. If you are interested, please RSVP here.

Coronavirus Update - The Coronavirus Policy has been updated regarding when to stay home. I’ll continue to update as new policies are shared. The Washington State Department of Health’s coronavirus school response website has been updated on when to stay home. From the Washington State Department of Health:
Should all children returning from China stay home from school for 14 days? The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all travelers from China (including school students, staff and volunteers) arriving in the U.S. AFTER February 2, 2020, at 2 p.m. stay at home, away from others, and monitor their health for 14 days. This measure was put in place because of the increasing number of cases of 2019-nCoV in China. All travelers from China arriving BEFORE February 2, 2020, at 2 p.m. can continue to attend school and should watch for any changes in your health for 14 days after leaving China. If you get a fever or develop a cough or difficulty breathing during this 14-day period, avoid contact with others. Call your doctor or healthcare provider to tell them about your symptoms and your recent travel.

CHA Gala Auction – Please, please, please join us at the auction on February 29th!  Currently, we have 237 people registered, against last year’s attendance of 264. Come on, you know it will be fun hanging out with me and all the wonderful people who make up our amazing community! Don’t you want to see what I will be wearing this year, find out how much Mrs. Choi’s fabulous artwork goes for, witness the bidding for the famous car parking spot and enjoy Marty Riemer’s witty reparteeThere is still time to RSVP and purchase sponsorships.  Please visit https://www.chestnuthillacademy.com/Auction to register or for more information before Friday, February 14th.  We look forward to seeing you there! Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions or need help registering.  Thank you for your support of CHAPTER and Chestnut Hill Academy!

CHA Gala Auction Volunteer Sign Up - If you can volunteer for any of the upcoming tasks, please add your name below. Dates and times are subject to change as we get closer to the event, so your flexibility is much appreciated.
