Important upcoming dates:

Dear CHA Community,

I appreciate your support and grace in accepting the decisions made regarding snow days.  A lot is taken into consideration in making the decision, with first and foremost being family and staff’s safety.  When you look at our Family Map, you can see just how wide the area we serve is. While Bellevue proper may have received little to no snow, the surrounding areas were in some places treacherous.  Our school calendar has makeup days built in already as we are in school more hours and days than are required by Washington State.  When other schools have a late start or early release one day a week, and teacher workshop days throughout the year, we are in session and therefore will not make up the three missed days.

The school will be closed on Monday as we observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There are many ways to celebrate the life and legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. in the Seattle area. Parent Map has an excellent list of family-friendly events that you can view here. The list includes rallies, exhibits, arts programs, and volunteer opportunities.

Costa Rica with CHA Families – Join Mrs. Bernal and Mrs. Fox on Wednesday, January 29th, at 5:45 pm in the first-floor Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) to learn about how you can explore Costa Rica with an eye towards global understanding and stewardship. On August 9-17 they, along with a full-time Costa Rican guide and a driver, will lead a group of 4th and 5th grade students and parents on an unforgettable adventure, hiking through forests, conducting dolphin research, and learning about the importance of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. To RSVP for the information night or for more details, please contact Kristina Bernal ([email protected]) or Debbie Fox ([email protected]). This is not an official CHA trip but will be a great experience for the students and their families who attend. You can view the itinerary here.

Family Math Night Dinner Raffle – Tickets are on sale for $5 each from Monday, January 13th through Tuesday, January 21st from the front desk. This is your chance to win VIP Underground Parking, personal chaperones for your kids, and a dinner and wine pairing in Mrs. Senaga’s office prepared by James Beard award-winning Chef Liam.

CHA Phone Number – For reasons we have never really understood, when we dial out from our phones at school the number will appear on your phone as 425-453-1393. Please can you add this number to your phone contacts so that you know it is us calling you!

Family Bingo - The deadline for the Family Bingo Cards has been pushed back to Friday, January 31st, instead of this Friday.  Our hope is that families who were on vacation during the holidays will use this month to participate in some of the activities.  Please continue to encourage your students to complete them at home.  There will still be a prize drawing for all who submit a card. You can find a copy of the card here if you need an extra one.

Spelling Bee – Whilst the snow shenanigans gave our students extra time to practice their spelling, it gave the teachers significantly less time to conduct them! However, I m pleased to say that the teachers managed to get them all done. The results are included below. Information and “permission slips” will go home that day to the students who qualified for the all-school bee.  The All-School Spelling Bee will be held on Friday, February 3rd starting at 1:30. The winner of the CHA Spelling Bee will move on to the Regional Spelling Bee in Seattle which will take place on February 29th, 2020 at Town Hall Seattle. The word lists can be found here - along with the Rules for the Spelling Bee.

Mid-Winter Break Sign Up - There will be no school the week of February 17th for Mid-Winter Break. CHA will be completely closed on Monday, February 17th (President’s Day), but there will be camp available on Tuesday - Friday. We are excited to announce the theme for the Mid-Winter Break camp… Lego Adventures! During this camp, students will be diving into CHA’s LEGO Robotics lab to learn building techniques and to explore basic engineering concepts through compelling, creative challenges (think rocket ships and city design).  Curiosity, experimentation, imagination, and LEGOs are all you need!  We look forward to building, collaborating, inventing, and innovating with these amazing engineering building bricks. Operational hours for camp are from 7:00 am-6:00 pm, with snacks and activities beginning around 9:00, am. Extended day packages (monthly and annual) do not include camp dates. Please visit the Sign-Ups page to register your child for camp.

Flickr - CHA has its own Flickr Album. During the snow days, Mrs. Morlidge, uploaded all the photos taken of students so far this year. You do need to be signed in for the link below to work. If you already have a Flickr account, email [email protected] stating the email address associated with your Flickr account and we will send you an invitation to view our album. The address for the Photostream is  http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/ (there is a link from the homepage of the school website).  Click here to view directions for using the CHA Flickr Album.

Specialists’ Newsletter - Due to the very short week there is no newsletter this week.

Weekly Snack List - You can view the snacks Chef Jose will be offering next week here. If your child is not eating the school snack, you are welcome to send a nut-free alternative to school in their backpack.
