Dear CHA Community,

Embracing kindness throughout this week with a growth mindset of how we, as leaders, foster the environment we spend our time in was nurtured through a variety of activities created by our Kindness Club. Learning the language of leadership, befriending self to lead others, incorporating our values, and becoming inspiring change agents who care about each other and the world helps students envision and explore how to apply what they have learned this week. The simple acts of kindness and the affection demonstrated towards one another was heartwarming. Encouraging your child to continue the challenge of showing kindness daily, and often, is something they will continue to see modeled and identified while sharing the kindness that occurred is another way of connecting kindness to actions of consideration. In the words of Harold S. Kushner, we want to encourage children to “do things for people not because of who they are or what they do in return, but because of who you are.”

Kindness Club - Kindness Club sponsored a week of kindness activities, including a book drive for a local YMCA family shelter, Caught Being Kind stickers, a video, and daily challenges. We ended the week with a Mix It Up lunch on Friday. Students were encouraged to invite someone that they had never sat with before to join them at lunch. While Kindness Week is over, we hope the spirit of the event continues throughout the year. Thank you to all Kindness Club members for their ideas and hard work to make the event a success!

Middle School Presentation – this week we were delighted to host parents from third, fourth and fifth grade families at the Middle School Presentation on Wednesday. If you were not able to attend the presentation and panel, you can view the slide deck here. Please email Mrs. Senaga if you have any questions.

Ski Season - The CHA Ski program is fast approaching, and this is a friendly reminder to register ASAP to avoid missing out on the fun!  It’s important that if you want to participate in the ski program that you purchase a Summit Seasons Pass as well as registering for ski lessons. We have built a web page that has all the information you need regarding the Ski program, chestnuthillacademy.com/ski_programFor families new to CHA it is especially important that you attend the New Parent Ski Orientation meeting on November 6thThe CHA Ski program is a highlight on the calendar for everyone involved and Coach Sturgess is very much looking forward to making this year’s program a great success. Please contact Coach Sturgess, if you have any questions.

Sibling Applications - Our admissions season is open and underway, and we would love to welcome more siblings to our Chestnut Hill Academy community.  If you have a child who will be five prior to September 30, 2020, and you are interested in applying for the 2020-21 school year, now is an excellent time to do so.  Our application deadline this year is January 24th, 2019, and you can begin your application process here.  Completing your application sooner rather than later will give you a scheduling advantage in making your child’s assessment meeting appointment, and for currently enrolled families with a younger sibling applying, we will offer an early admission decision deadline so you can plan accordingly for the following school year.  We look forward to getting to know more future CHA students in the coming months!

November Conferences Childcare Sign Up - Conferences will be held throughout the day on Wednesday, November 20th through Friday, November 22nd. There will be no school on these days. CHA will be open normal time, from 7:00 am-6:00 pm. If you’d like your child to be in the drop-in room for the duration of your parent-teacher conference only, you do not need to sign-up. If you signed up for the Annual or Monthly ED packages, these days are covered in your plan, but you will still have to sign up. If you plan to utilize BUCA or Microsoft School’s Out, you do not need to sign-up here. This sign-up site closes Tuesday, November 12th at 4:00 pm. Any sign-ups after this time will be considered late and a $50 late fee will be charged to your account.

Halloween Celebrations - CHA will be celebrating Halloween on Thursday, October 31st. Please join us for our Halloween Parade starting @ 2:40. Costumes are optional for everyone. If your child chooses not to dress up, he or she can wear free dress. When helping your child choose a costume for school, please use the following guidelines:

  • Masks will be allowed only during class parties. Students who ride the shuttle will not be allowed to wear masks on the bus.
  • NO weapons or potentially dangerous props may be brought to school.
  • NO bloody or gory costumes should be worn to school.
  • Costumes must be safe for playing on the playground and comfortable for wearing in the classroom (NO flip flops, cleats, slip-ons, or high heeled shoes, please).
  • Costumes should be appropriate for the weather conditions that day.
  • Please know that some party activities are messy and children occasionally get their costumes dirty during the day.
  • Students are welcome to change into costume prior to their classroom party if they’d be more comfortable in free dress throughout the day.

Your child’s classroom party planners will be sending home information about parties. Fall Festival - Thank you to everyone who came out and had fun at the Fall Festival. We raised $1,472 for the Tukwila Weekend SnackPack program, for which they were very grateful. We have uploaded the photos to our CHA Flickr Album. You can access them here if you have been invited. If you have a Flickr account and would like to be invited, please email [email protected] . There is also a short video on our You Tube Channel here.

Book Fair - A big thank you to all the parents, students and staff who supported our school by helping and purchasing items and donating to teachers’ wish list at our Scholastic Book Fair last week! Our Book Fair was a huge success. The total fair sales amount was $16,178 with donations to classroom at $5,717, of which $3,011 donated by parents.    This gives us a net amount of $7,354 (50% of fair sales after tax) in Scholastic Dollars which will be used to buy new books for our school. Thank you, parents and Book Fair volunteers!
