Dear CHA Community,
Each of us has greatness that we express and experience in life in our own way. As a principal, I believe all children are exceptional. I want my students to work to the best of their ability and thrive as individuals. It is important for each of them to grow, learn and progress. Sometimes we make children feel as if they need to change who they are in order to earn our love, support, and acceptance. As your child begins the academic year, know that this is a starting point from which to begin. The continuum of growth and development will occur when they are ready. So, what can you do? Join me in encouraging your child to step into the unknown. Challenge them to be their best selves. Build their confidence through the encouragement of their capabilities. Create a strong partnership with their teacher and school. Above all, let them know they are loved and how important they are to you.
Walk-a-thon - We were excited to have fantastic participation at our first CHAPTER event of the year! This event has become a CHA tradition, with this being our 8th Walk-a-thon. Students were excited to be walking and racking up the laps while raising funds for the school. It was also wonderful to see our parent community come together and interact/ share notes despite the rather average weather. Today, you will receive a card indicating how many laps your child completed at the Walkathon. Please submit a check for your outstanding balance (flat donations and per-lap donations) in your Walkathon envelope and drop off at the front desk. Also, don’t forget to submit for corporate matching! If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].
Admissions and Parent Referral Program - Chestnut Hill Academy is currently accepting applications for the 2020-2021 school year. Our application deadline is Friday, January 24th. We appreciate parents who have recommended CHA to their family and friends as well as continuing to entrust their children’s education to us. Parents who made family referrals whose children are accepted will receive a Referral Bonus of $250 per family. Every family is eligible to participate in the referral program, and it’s simple. First, refer the family. Second, make sure the family lists your name on their application when asked how they heard of CHA. Third, the family is accepted in March. Fourth, the student begins in September. Finally, referrals are paid out in October through ACH. If you would like to refer a family to CHA, please direct them to www.chestnuthillacademy.com/admissions. This will give prospective families the steps they need to apply. Thank you for your recommendations.
Peaceful Playground Program – We are thrilled that our new Peaceful Playground has been completed (Thank you, CHAPTER!), and that students now have access to our updated play yard. As part of the Peaceful Playgrounds program, students are introduced to a variety of interactive, collaborative playground games through which they can practice inclusion, taking turns, and following simple rules and guidelines to enhance their gross motor play and stimulate their brains in addition to their muscles. As we have introduced new playground equipment and programs on both the large field and on the smaller yard in the past year, we’re seeing students explore the limits of their physical abilities and challenge themselves in new ways. All new learning, especially learning that involves students stretching themselves in relation to physical mastery, incorporates an element of risk. To promote safe practices and to ensure students are familiar with the new games on the upper yard, Coach Sturgess has been utilizing PE classes to introduce the different games and their corresponding rules. We anticipate that in addition to regular practice of the interpersonal skills associated with some of the 7 Habits, such as “Think Win-Win”, “Seek First to Understand”, and “Synergize”, the monkey bars, swings, tetherballs, and other new features will all be challenging our students to test their reflexes, push their physical boundaries, and enjoy new, exciting games with friends.
Curriculum Night PowerPoint Presentations – For parents who were unable to attend last night’s Curriculum Night, I wanted to let you know that the presentations have been loaded to the relevant grade level page on the school website. To view the presentation, please go to the Parent Portal, choose your students grade from the dropdown on the left side under ‘Groups’, and then scroll down the page a little until you see the ‘Downloads’ section on the left. Please email [email protected] if you have any questions.
Leader in Me Handout – Following on from the information that was shard with you at Curriculum Night, we are happy to tell you that you will find a flier in your CHA student’s Friday Folder that has some more helpful information about the habits and how you can help your child practice them at home. The flier has also been uploaded to our CHA Leader in Me page where you will also find other useful resources.
Middle School Presentation - We are looking forward to welcoming Third through Fifth grade families to the Middle School Presentation on October 23rd. The event will be from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Chestnut Hill Academy Gym. Dinner will be catered and childcare is provided for CHA students where pizza, fruit and milk will be served. Please RSVP on our Sign-Up page. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email Kaylee Strachan. We will be hosting a lunchtime Middle School Parent Panel. It will run from 11:00 till 1:00 and lunch will be provided. More information will be available about that in a week or two, but for now please save the date.
Flickr Photo Album - As we go through the year Mrs. Morlidge will be uploading photos that staff and parents take, in class and at community events, to our private CHA Flickr album.
