Dear CHA Community,  

Welcome to your first Campus Updates where we utilize Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. Communication is the most important life skill and communicating effectively a gift.  This is the weekly communication we will send every week to give you a school-wide view of what’s happening at CHA. We know how and what we communicate sets families for success. When school is in session you will also receive a weekly newsletter from your child’s teachers. Please check that your spouse/partner received this communication and email [email protected] if they have not.  

Leader in Me Parent Class – On August 27th 6-8:00 pm CHA and CHAPTER invite you to join us and learn practical tools to help you implement the principles and practices of the 7 Habits into your home.  By connecting home and school through the 7 Habits, our culture will be strengthened.  The class covers how to Keep It Simple:  Applying the principles at home to make your home life easier and happier.  Parent Guides will be shared via email in English, Spanish and Chinese after the class. Dinner and childcare (children under 5 years old must remain with their parent) will be provided. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP here by Monday, August 26th. New Faces – Please join me in welcoming the following new staff to CHA: Carmela Laya (Teacher, 1st Grade), Chelsea Roberts (Teacher, Kindergarten), Duygu Demirkan (Instructional Assistant), Jack Sturgess (Specialist, PE), Jose Morales (Chef), Kaylee Strachan (Admin Assistant), Maddie Jones (Teacher, 4th Grade), Sage Plunkett (Instructional Assistant), Stacy Cooke (Teacher, 4th Grade), Suzanne Corner (Specialist, Academics), and Vanessa Suarez (Specialist, Spanish). You can find out more information about all new staff on the website here, and just as soon as the school photographer has been, we will have portraits as well!  

Family Style Dining – CHA is removing the lunch line and moving to family-style dining in the remodelled cafe! Whether you’re eating at home, dining out, or having dinner with friends, good table manners for children are an essential part of every meal. Teaching children good table manners gives them essential tools for social interaction that will serve them for the rest of their lives. Staff and students sharing a relaxed mealtime experience that allows children to take part in the entire meal from setting the table to cleaning up is a valuable life skill. With daily repetition and consistency, we are optimistic that the students at CHA will master family-style dining. In addition, we will be changing the fate of unwanted food to reduce waste and upholding our commitment as a Level 4 King County Green School. You and Me Cleaning Crew Application – Students in grades 1 through 5 are invited to apply for a leadership position on the You and Me Cleaning Crew for the fall trimester. You will find the form here.  

Table Captain Application – Students in grades 2 through 5 are invited to apply for a leadership position as Table Captain for the fall trimester. You will find the form here. Applying to be a Table Captain or part of the You & Me Cleaning Crew does not impact a student’s ability to be part of Student Lighthouse, Green Team, Kindness Club or Student Ambassadors. Students should submit their application no later than Tuesday, September 3rd.  

September Lunch Order - The webform for ordering school lunches is now open and will remain open until Friday, August 30th at 4 pm. You can find the form and the menu here. You will notice there is no longer an option to order ‘Milk Only’. That is because we will supply milk to any student who would like it free of charge, as part of the improvements we are making to the overall lunchtime experience. If you have any questions about the menu, the ordering process or the billing, please email [email protected].  

Ice Cream Social – Doors open at 2pm on September 3rd for this much-awaited event. No need to wear school uniform! Lockers will have been assigned if you want to bring your decorations. Here is what the Parent Handbook says about that - Lockers may be decorated if the decorations don’t impede the proper use of the locker, and all decorations remain on the inside of the locker. Duct tape and stickers are not to be used on lockers at any time. All decorations must stay inside the locker. Students self-portraits are the only items allowed on the outside of students’ lockers at any time. Students do not need, and in fact are not allowed, to bring keys in for their lockers. Completed projects or debris should be cleaned out of lockers at the end of every week.  

Vendor Fair – The extracurricular schedule will be published here on August 30th. Sign-ups will not open until the Vendor Fair on September 3rd. All students who sign-up for an extracurricular class will be required to complete the online Extracurricular Agreement Form before classes begin the second week of September.  

Peaceful Playground - The upper playground has undergone a transformation and welcomed in the Peaceful Playground Program which focuses on intentional play.  With students spending less time outside, opportunities to explore traditional games such as:  Four Square, Tetherball, Hop Scotch, Around the World and Wall Ball that encourage peer engagement, cooperation and conversation seem to occur less and less.  The new playground encourages students to engage at every turn and involves more children in play.  It will enhance their communication skills and promote positive social interactions.  Students will learn how to utilize and play games that offer consistent rules over the first eight days.  On behalf of the students, we’d like to thank CHAPTER, our PTA for their support with the remodel.    

Summer Reading and Math – Studies show that students regress over the break; it’s called Summer Slump. Now would be a good time to check in with your child see if they have been working on their Summer Reading and Math goals. You will find all the info you need here. In IXL Math you can add yourself to their account so that you can see what they have been doing in the program; don’t forget to check they are working at the correct grade level! Incoming Kindergartners are not required to do the activities, but they have IXL accounts all set up if they want to get some practice. Their username will be first initial plus first four letters of the last name, and their password will be their first name and both username and password are all lowercase. Email [email protected] if you are having issues.  

First Day of School - Students don’t have to be in Dress Uniform because it’s a Wednesday, but lots of children will be so they look their best for the first day of school photos. PTA (CHAPTER) volunteers will be on hand to direct traffic. If you are not familiar with the traffic flow, it would be a good idea to consult the diagram, follow the arrows and only park in parking spaces demarcated with white lines. The first few days are always fun, we suggest you allow a little extra time while everyone gets acclimated.  

Door Codes – If this is your family’s first year at CHA, you will be emailed your unique four-digit door code to enter the building during operational hours. If you are a returning family but have forgotten your code, please email Kaylee Strachan ([email protected]) and she will send it to you.  

Navigating the Car Park – We have made a short video to help incoming families understand which entrance to use and where to park. You can view it here. Vakker School Portraits – The school photographer will be coming to CHA on Monday, September 9th for individuals and class groups, and again on Monday, September 23rd for retakes, makeups & sibling groups. All students will be photographed. All students will need to be in Dress Uniform, even if they have PE that day. You can find out what Dress Uniform looks like here. September Conference Childcare - Goal-Setting Conferences will be held Wednesday, September 25th through Friday, September 27th. There will be no school on these days, but childcare will be available from 7:00am-6:00 pm. If you’d like your child to be in the drop-in room for the duration of your parent-teacher conference only, or if you plan to utilize BUCA or Microsoft School’s Out, you do not need to sign-up. If you signed up for the Annual or Monthly ED packages, these days are covered in your plan, but you will still need to sign up here. This sign-up site closes Tuesday, September 17th at 4:00 pm. Any sign-ups after this time will be considered late and a $50 late fee will be charged to your account. If you have any questions, please email Kaylee Strachan.   

CHA Parent Handbook – The updated version of our Parent Handbook, which is required reading, will be sent out in next week’s Campus Updates. You will also receive a paper slip in your child’s Friday Folder that you should sign and return once you have reviewed the handbook. If we make subsequent changes to the Handbook, we will notify you via Campus Updates.
