Important upcoming dates:

Dear CHA Community,

Welcome to your first Campus Updates of the new school year. This is the weekly communication we will send every week to give you a school wide view of what’s happening at CHA. When school is in session you will also receive a weekly newsletter from your child’s teachers. Please check that your spouse/partner received this communication and email [email protected].

New Faces – We are delighted to introduce you to the folks who are new to CHA this year. Joining us as Assistant Principal and PE Coach is Derek Heinz, formerly Dean of Students at McKnight Middle School. We are also excited to welcome Katie Norkus, who has recently moved up from California. Katie will be teaching 5th Grade Language Arts. We are very happy to welcome back Hazel Dewitt as 5th Grade Math and Science teacher and Ilene Gorski as Technology Specialist. Last, but by no means least we have new additions to the Instructional Assistants team – Veronica Luckey, Courtnei Robbins, Le Liu, and Tony Tran. You can see photos and bios of staff on our website faculty page here.

Ice Cream Social – No need to wear school uniform, lockers will have been assigned if you want to bring your decorations. Here is what the Parent Handbook says about that - Lockers may be decorated if the decorations don’t impede the proper use of the locker, and all decorations remain on the inside of the locker. Duct tape and stickers are not to be used on lockers at any time. All decorations must stay inside the locker. Students self-portraits are the only items allowed on the outside of students’ lockers at any time. Students do not need, and in fact are not allowed, to bring keys in for their lockers. Completed projects or debris should be cleaned out of lockers at the end of every week.

Vendor Fair and Extracurricular Classes – The Vendor Fair is your opportunity to meet with extracurricular vendors and sign your child up for after school classes. The fair takes place after the Ice Cream Social, in the school gym. The doors will open at 3. You can see the schedule of classes that will be available here. Registration opens at the time of the Vendor Fair. We will load vendor flyers which contain registration information at the same time as the Vendor Fair for those of you unable to attend the fair.

First Day of School – Students don’t have to be in Dress Uniform because it’s a Wednesday, but lots of children will be so they look their best for the first day of school photos. PTA (CHAPTER) volunteers will be on hand to direct traffic. If you are not familiar with the traffic flow, it would be a good idea to consult the diagram, follow the arrows and only park in parking spaces demarcated with white lines. The few days are always fun, we suggest you allow a little extra time while everyone gets acclimated.

Car Pool Map – Talking of parking, did you look at the heat map Mrs. Morlidge made? It’s a great way of finding out who’s on your route to school and might be available to share a ride. It will also show you which children in your child’s grade are close by for play dates. Once you have located a student and their family on the map, you can find their contact info in the Student Directory. You will find links to both on the Parent Portal here.

Vakker School Portraits – Monday, September 10th is picture day. All students need to be in Dress Uniform. You can find out everything you need to know about how to order photos on the Vakker Flyer which is available on the website Parent Portal, hyperlinked here and coming home in your first Friday Folder next week.

September Payment Draft – Our Business Manager, sent an email yesterday as the September 1st draft is coming up. Please review your statement in the Family Information Center and let Jaynie Woodard know if you have any questions or concerns. If you did not receive the email, please contact [email protected].

Weekly Snack List – You can view the snacks Chef Megan will be offering the first week of school here. If your child will not be eating the school snack you are welcome to send a nut free alternative to school in their backpack.

CHA’s PTA ‘CHAPTER’ Updates – When parents are directly involved in activities and events, it sends a very strong message to children: school is important! As a result, students have higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates. Over thirty years of research on parent involvement in schools has consistently found it to produce positive results for students. We’ve had outstanding participation and support here at CHA, and believe it is vital to our students’ achievements. You can see where the opportunities are to get involved if you head on over to CHAPTER’s Fall Volunteer Sign Up on CHA Sign Up’s Page.  CHAPTER will be having an all parent meeting prior to Curriculum Night. Please RSVP here.

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend,

Holly Senaga,

Head of School
