When some of you woke up to snow this morning and began watching the news ticker to see if there’d be school or late start only to find it was power outages that closed the school for the day, makes this morning a testament to your patience. The initial power did not go out until 7:15 with an update from PSE showing it coming back on around 9:30. The power came back on around 8:45, but I wanted to wait 15 minutes to ensure it didn’t go out again before we communicated we’d be open. After 20 minutes of having power, communication was sent that we’d open at 9:30 for care and 10:00 for school. No sooner did communication go out and the power went out again. At that time, I made the decision to close for the day rather than have parents continue to drive back and forth given the uncertainty of the power. Due to CHA students being in school more days and hours then are required and not participating in late start or early release days, today will not need to be made up.
It’s now begun to snow outside the windows of CHA. The afternoon will tell what the remainder of the day will bring. I understand there were disappointed students who had field trips planned, book reports to present, and learning to occur. I also understand we had disappointed parents and teachers who had work to do. The decision to close the school or delay the start of school is not taken lightly; as working parents ourselves we understand the inconvenience it causes. Our decision is almost always based on the protocol adopted by the Bellevue and Issaquah School Districts. We have staff and parents coming from a wide geographic area; even if conditions are good where you are, that might not be the case for the rest of our community.
Emergency Alert Notifications - As well as posting the message on the school website, we will use Jupiter to notify you by text and email.
