Core Curriculum MathematicsChestnut Hill Academy’s mathematics curriculum is designed to ensure all students have an opportunity to become mathematically literate, as well as logical and conceptual thinkers. Beginning in Kindergarten and continuing through middle school, students are provided with a full range of mathematical topics including algebra, probability, geometry, measurement, numeration, patterns, and operations. CHA’s math curriculum also provides learning opportunities for problem solving, reasoning, communicating, and applying mathematics to other curricular areas. Students develop confidence in their ability to use mathematics in real life applications. Our students are challenged by rigorous and relevant mathematics instruction with a focus on understanding mathematical concepts. ScienceChestnut Hill Academy’s science curriculum develops scientific literacy in order to help students make informed and effective decisions in their life. Through activities in the physical life and earth science the program provides hands-on experiences where children can learn by actively participating in the scientific method. Students are actively involved in developing scientific skill and concepts, working cooperatively and independently, and conducting research or experiments. Curiosity, open-mindedness, skepticism, questioning, and ethical behavior are central their development of scientific inquiry. Language ArtsChestnut Hill Academy’s language arts curriculum presents a balance of literature, writing, word study, speaking, and grammar. Students are encouraged to demonstrate critical thinking skills, expand their reading comprehension, to write with clarity and purpose, and to speak in a confident, fluent manner. Opportunities to read for enjoyment, cultivate their personal voice, and understand and appreciate various genres and multicultural literary themes are also provided. Strategies for learning and applying English language grammar and conventions, building vocabulary, and mastering spelling proficiency round out the language arts curriculum. Literature/Reading – The language arts curriculum is a literature based program which builds a strong foundation of phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency and comprehension skills. Students develop solid independent reading skills and the habits to enjoy a life full of reading. Writing Process – Instruction in writing is presented as a process. Students develop skill to organize their writing through the practice of pre-writing, creating first drafts, editing, and revising their writing. An understanding of various types of writing for different purposes is acquired. Oral and Visual Communication – Students develop both their active listening and presentation skills. Small group and whole class experiences for students to speak appropriately in front of others are given over the course of each year. Research – Acquiring knowledge from multiple sources begins in the primary grades. Student’s earliest form of research is simply looking up answers to questions they have formulated. Over the years students become more sophisticated and adopt methods to successfully complete a variety of research projects. Social StudiesChestnut Hill’s social studies curriculum prepares students to be informed, responsible and contributing citizens to our society. At the school our students are instilled with respect for the rights and beliefs of others in this diverse world. Through the study of history, geography, economics, political science, cultures, government, and current events students examine cultural and historical events from a global perspective.
